Application for citizenship to Alþingi

If you do not fulfill all requirements for applying for citizenship with the administration, i.e. the Directorate of Immigration, you can apply for it at the Icelandic Parliament (Alþingi). Twice a year, Alþingi grants citizenship to applicants. In the last five years, an average of 20 requests were approved per application process. There is an application fee of 27.000 ISK. If you also want to apply for citizenship for your child(ren), their application can be included in yours and you do not have to pay an extra fee. You can pay the fee by bank transfer before applying. It is necessary to attach the payment receipt to the application, otherwise your application will not be taken into consideration and will be sent back to you.

The application must be submitted in paper form to the Directorate of Immigration, Dalvegur 18, 201 Kópavogur. You can either leave it in the drop box in the lobby or send it by mail.

It is also possible to hand in and pay for the application at the reception of the Directorate of Immigration or at the offices of District Commissioners outside the capital area.

The application form requires basic information about you and your family and why you should be granted citizenship. You can fill it out on your computer and then print it out. Reasons for an application can for example be your intention to stay in Iceland, to be part of the society and to work here, but why you wish to refer the application to Alþingi is very personal and differs from person to person. If you can write the text in Icelandic, it can demonstrate a successful integration.
