International Humanitarian Law and Current Conflicts: New Challenges and Dilemmas? is tailored to meet the needs of policy makers and practitioners working within the field of humanitarian assistance and protection. This advanced training will serve as an opportunity for acquisition and refinement of the skills necessary to address humanitarian challenges through operational training and instruction on International Humanitarian Law (IHL), plenary debates and policy discussions on key challenges, as well as working group sessions, simulation exercises, and case studies.
This advanced training is part of HPCR?s international training program with courses hosted at Harvard University and locations worldwide.
Faculty will be comprised of experts in humanitarian law and policy, drawing from experienced practitioners and leading academics. Selected topics will include:
- Introduction to IHL and its implementation
- Distinction between civilians and combatants
- Humanitarian access
- Occupation law and peacebuilding
- Islamic law and IHL
- New actors and technologies in current conflicts
The course fee is ?1200 and is inclusive of accommodations, meals and training materials.
The course will be conducted in English.
The advanced training is addressed to mid-career professionals concerned with the role of IHL and humanitarian policy in the work of governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations operating in conflict zones. Participants are expected to have prior professional experience with humanitarian operations and the application of international humanitarian law. Fluency in English is required. The organizers welcome inquiries from members of the UN, NGO, diplomatic, academic, media and military communities.
