Research Director
The Danish Institute for Human Rights invites applications for a position as head of its Research Department.
The Danish Institute for Human Rights has been assigned the tasks of promoting awareness and knowledge of human rights standards and foundational human rights values. Similarly, the Institute seeks to develop knowledge of the history and development of human rights as well as their practical implementation in Denmark and the rest of the world.
The Research Department strives to play a leading international role within the following focus areas:
- Discrimination and equal treatment
- Access to justice ? procedural and substantial human rights
protection
- International regulation and local interests
Area of responsibility
The Research Director is head of the Research Department.
The Research Director is expected to conduct his or her own research in the field of human rights. In addition, as head of the Research Department, he/she will be responsible for the following key areas:
- Initiating and developing research projects, including overall
responsibility for internal PhD programmes
- Promoting the development of methods and theories, e.g. by holding
interdisciplinary research seminars and conferences
- Initiating efforts to influence the public debate in Denmark on
Danish and international human rights issues.
- Stimulating the researchers in the Department to work on and develop the focus areas of research
- Expanding research network development
- Cooperating with other Departments within the Institute
- Managing the overall administration of the Research Department.
The European Masters Degree in Human Rights and Democratisation
(E.MA) and the Research Partnership Programme (RPP) are associated with the Department, and academic and administrative responsibility for these programmes is delegated to researchers in the Department.
The annual 6 months? Fulbright Chair is a responsibility shared by the Research Department and our sister institute, the Danish Institute for International Studies.
The composition of the Research Department staff is interdisciplinary.
Besides the Director, the Department currently consists of seven researchers, two analysts and four PhD students. Furthermore, a secretary and a few student assistants and trainees are attached to the Department. Master students (E.MA) and guest researchers (RPP) are also attached to the Department for short periods of time in connection with the above-mentioned programmes.
Qualifications
The candidate should be a researcher with a background in law, social sciences or in the humanities. The post requires the candidate to have:
- documented academic qualifications at a level equivalent to that of
a full professor
- relevant documented managerial experience
- international recognition in the field of research into the theoretical and practical problems of human rights
- active participation in national and international researcher networks
- documented capability for interdisciplinary research cooperation
The candidate must possess good cooperation and leadership skills. It would also be an advantage for the future Research Director to have experience in fund raising. The working languages of the Institute are Danish and English. Non-Danish applicants should be prepared to learn Danish.
Salary and employment conditions are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The post will be remunerated at professorial level, commensurate with salary grade 37. The successful applicant is expected to take up the post by early 2008.
