Human Rights Law Centre short courses for those pursuing a career in human rights
International Human Rights Law Short Course - This is a three month course intended for persons who are interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of international human rights standards and the international machinery of the United Nations, Council of Europe, the OAS and the African Union for implementing these standards and how this machinery works in practice. This course will take place during October to mid December 2007 and will be repeated in January to March 2008.
The Law and Practice of Human Rights Field Operations Short Course - This three-month course balances a wide-ranging and deep study of human rights law with skills training for such activities as human rights monitoring, reporting, advocacy and capacity building. Close attention is paid to the modern realities of field work and participants gain a strong understanding of the relevance of human rights for humanitarian action, development and transitional justice. The course runs from January to March 2008.
The course is led by Professor Michael O’Flaherty, Co-Director of the Centre; Professor of Applied Human Rights, School of Law, University of Nottingham; and member of the UN Human Rights Committee. He managed UN human rights field operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Sierra Leone and participated in the design of the UN operations in East Timor and Afghanistan. He directs the international research project, "The Human Rights Field Officer - Consolidating the Profession”.
